The Mountain House is a 2500 sf horizontal addition to an existing house in Corona Heights neighborhood of San Francisco. The project splits the house into three stacked units — a two-bedroom townhouse, a three-bedroom family apartment, and a one-bedroom roof terrace apartment. By layering these lifestyles and increasing the density of the typical San Francisco home, affordability and quality are simultaneously achieved while increasing the diversity of the neighborhood. Situated across from the apex of hill of Corona Heights, the surreal encounter between nature and the city is heightened through the facade. The depth of the surface utilizes a series of voids to bring the hybrid context—nature and city—to the interior of the domestic realm.
